Modal Verbs (Can, Could, Should, Must, etc.) –
Modal verbs English grammar ke
important part hote hain. Ye helping verbs hote hain jo kisi sentence ka
mood, possibility, necessity, advice ya permission show karte hain.
Chaliye har modal verb ko detail mein samajhte hain:
1.
Can – Ability ya Permission dikhane ke liye
🔹 Use:
- Ability (योग्यता)
- Permission (अनुमति)
🔹 Examples:
- I can swim. (Main tair sakta hoon.) – Ability
- Can I go
to the park? (Kya main park ja sakta hoon?) – Permission
🔹 Notes: Present
tense mein use hota hai.

Could – Past Ability, Polite Request, Possibility
🔹 Use:
- Past ability (भूतकाल में
योग्यता)
- Polite request (विनम्र अनुरोध)
- Possibility (संभावना)
🔹 Examples:
- I could read when I was five. (Main paanch
saal ka tha tab padh sakta tha.) – Past ability
- Could
you help me? (Kya aap meri madad kar sakte hain?) – Polite request
- It could rain today. (Aaj baarish ho sakti
hai.) – Possibility

Should – Advice ya Obligation
🔹 Use:
- Advice (सलाह)
- Duty ya moral obligation (कर्तव्य)
🔹 Examples:
- You should study for your exam. (Tumhein apne
exam ke liye padhna chahiye.) – Advice
- We should respect our elders. (Humein apne
bado ka samman karna chahiye.) – Moral duty

Must – Strong Obligation ya Necessity
🔹 Use:
- Strong necessity (कड़ी
आवश्यकता)
- Rule/law (नियम/कानून)
- Deduction (अनुमान)
🔹 Examples:
- You must wear a seatbelt. (Seatbelt lagana
zaroori hai.) – Rule
- I must finish this work today. (Mujhe aaj hi
kaam khatam karna hi hoga.) – Necessity
- He must be tired. (Woh thaka hua hoga.) –
Deduction/guess

May – Formal Permission or Possibility
🔹 Use:
- Formal permission (औपचारिक
अनुमति)
- Possibility (संभावना)
🔹 Examples:
- May I
come in? (Kya main andar aa sakta hoon?) – Formal permission
- It may snow tonight. (Aaj raat barf pad sakti
hai.) – Possibility
6.
Might – Less certain Possibility
🔹 Use:
- Weak possibility (कम
संभावना)
🔹 Examples:
- He might come to the party. (Ho sakta hai woh
party mein aaye.)
7.
Shall – Future action (formal), Suggestion
🔹 Use:
- Future (with “I” or “We”)
- Suggestions or offers
🔹 Examples:
- Shall
we go for a walk? (Kya hum walk par chalein?) – Suggestion
- I shall return soon. (Main jaldi wapas aaunga.)
– Formal future

Will – Future Action or Promise
🔹 Use:
- Future plans
- Promise/Determination
🔹 Examples:
- She will visit us tomorrow. (Woh kal humse
milne aayegi.)
- I will never give up. (Main kabhi haar nahi
manunga.)
9.
Would – Past Habit, Polite Request, Imaginary Situation
🔹 Use:
- Past habits
- Polite request
- Hypothetical condition
🔹 Examples:
- When I was a kid, I would play outside every
day. (Bachpan mein main roz khelta tha.) – Habit
- Would
you like some tea? (Kya aap chai lena chaheinge?) – Polite offer
- I would travel the world if I had money. (Agar
mere paas paise hote to main duniya ghoomta.) – Imaginary
Bonus:
Modal Verbs के बाद
हमेशा base form
of verb (1st form) use होती है:
✅ Correct: I can go.
❌ Incorrect: I can goes.
Either way the teacher or student will get the solution to the problem within 24 hours.
